In Memory

Robert Oyler

Robert Gordon Oyler (Bob, Papa) was born March 20, 1944, in Salt Lake City, Utah and passed away surrounded by his children and wife on April 4, 2020. Bob is survived by his incredible beautiful loving wife of 44 years, Char Datwyler, along with three children, Mark (Kathy Oyler), Julie (Cannon Kuch), and Jenna (Joe Hansen) and his most beloved people: His 10 grandchildren; Jada Oyler; Kallie, Porter, Kaitlyn, Ava, and CJ Kuch; Tori, Josie, Campbell, and Aspen Hansen; and Cindy (make-believe grandchild).

Papa would always take the opportunity to make his grandkids feel they were important and he created memories with them that will last forever. His #1 rule was NO RULES with grandkids. He would spend hours dressing up as a princess, playing outside, make-believe or any other crazy games the kids came up with. Papa created laughter, play and love everywhere he went.

Papa knew how to work hard and play harder. Although he worked hard he lived by the phrase "always eat dessert first" so he always made time to snowmobile, boat, and snow ski. He skied every weekend with his grandkids throughout his whole life.

Machines spoke to him. He could fix anything and everything, from the toys and bikes of his grandkids to cars and boats. Everyone knew he would drop anything and everything to help out and be there.

Bob was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He enjoyed his many callings, especially when he was the ward mission leader and with the children in Nursery.

Bob raised his children and grandchildren to firmly believe and repeat loudly in very public places, "I'm good, I'm great, I'm #1." He always believed we were capable of so much, never gave up on us, and would never allow us to give up on ourselves.

Bob never met a bargain he didn't like. Dollar stores, garage sales, and thrift stores will definitely miss him!

He built a beautiful cabin for us in the mountains of Oakley where our family will gather for generations and feel his presence. We will know our beloved Papa is there when: we are lost in play, we put our family and children first, we work hard to achieve a goal and get up every time we fail, and we take time to serve and help others no matter how inconvenient.

In lieu of flowers to honor Bob please:

• Say "yes" even if you want to say no when a child asks you to play

• Break a rule and laugh while doing it, because as Bob always reminded us, "It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission

• Have someone who is having a rough day repeat out loud "I'm good, I'm great, I'm #1" over and over until they crack a smile

• Buy a child a gift for no reason

• Cuddle and snuggle someone you love

And remember Eat dessert first because you never know when you are going to die.
